Internet Safety

Respond to the questions below. You may add to and/or edit others' responses.

How did the internet safety orientation go with students and staff at the beginning of the year? What went well? What would you want to do differently?

Kids enjoyed the websites; internet safety poster contest could be announced earlier to give students more time-was also during a busy time (reflections). We incorporated Internet safety with stranger danger.

Have the internet safety tips been effective in emphasizing internet safety with students?

It's hard to tell-when students go online at school, they're often times playing games, not really doing research. At home, it's hard for the teacher to tell what they're doing.

What lessons/activities have you completed with students to emphasize internet safety? How did you integrate this activity with curriculum-based lessons?

We talked about rules and good citizenship, relating it to the rules of online saftey. We are teaching the kids a safe way of logging into various websites using a pseudo name. We've talked to the kids about not assuming a website is safe to use their names even on a teacher-recommended website.

What lessons/activities have you completed with students to emphasize the ethical use of internet resources?

How did you integrate this activity with curriculum-based lessons?

How have you encouraged teachers to take responsibility for teaching internet safety and the ethical use of internet resources?

We have encouraged teachers to define parameters for the students before beginning a lesson using internet resources rather than giving them general instructions to "research a topic" on the "internet."
